Carmel, CA

Carmel-by-the-Sea, usually called simply Carmel is a small town in Monterey County. Clint Eastwood served a term as mayor of Carmel in 1986. We took these photos as we walked on the white-sand beach. The homes are across from the beach…talk about a view! The home with the For Sale was going for just $6,900,000! Gotta pay to look at the sea!

Filoli Gardens is known throughout the world for its magnificent gardens that are recognized for their historic significance. Based on European design, the grounds include soothing water gardens and terraced gardens. During Spring it can burst into life with 58,000 tulips and 25,000 daffodils. Filoli

Explore Filoli

Filoli was built for Mr. and Mrs. William Bowers Bourn, prominent San Franciscans whose chief source of wealth was the Empire Mine, a hard-rock gold mine in Grass Valley, California. Mr. Bourn was also owner and president of the Spring Valley Water Company. He arrived at the unusual name Filoli by combining the first two letters from the words of his credo: “Fight for a just  cause; Love your fellow man; Live a good life.” Mr. and Mrs. Bourn died in 1936 and the estate was purchased in 1937 by Mr. and Mrs. William P. Roth, who owned the Matson Navigation Company. Mrs. Roth made Filoli her home until 1975 when she donated 125 acres, which included the House and formal garden, to the National Trust for Historic Preservation.
